Music inudstry drops effort to sue song swappers |

instead, they are going after their Internet access
When I first read that headline, I thought, "Yes! Finally! They're going to give up and let us have the music we want!" Then I read the rest of the news story and saw that they'd be going after individuals' ISPs, so basically, they're not going to let have the music we want unless we pay for it.
Music should be free. Let the musicians find other ways to market their music, like merchandising and concerts. Did you know that when I saw Weird Al Yankovic in concert (not once, but twice), the merch table didn't sell any DVDs or CDs or any media-related stuff like that? Just hats and t-shirts. Makes you think, doesn't it? |

In the music industry this does not surprise me. The talented musicians, this is there career. If there music is not bought, they do not make any money. The proceeds from music is spilt between the artist and the actual company that produced. The people from the internet have continued to do this, which means they are not getting paychecks. That is how the entertainment industry works.
My sister used to work in that industry until my mom got sick, but she will be going back to it soon.(which I always hear about what is happening, etc) I can also say look for this to happen with the people that download movies illegally, etc.
Right now times are tough, even celebrities are losing their homes. Bottom line they want their paycheck just like we do. |

But I hear that the record labels get relatively more of the proceeds from the music sold than the artists are getting. That is traditionally how it is. Even though they are getting paid, they're actually losing money to the music industry than illegal downloaders.
Now, if they sell enough music that they distribute themselves, that's a different story. |

| Artists make royalities and a percentage. Without the big record labels they would be nothing. |

| Not if they have a loyal fan following and know how to market themselves well enough. For every CD an independent artist sells, they get all the money plus their cut from the gigs that they play. I, too, know someone in this business (several someones actually), and this is from what I have observed. Plus, I read their LJ/blogs/Facebook posts. |

EVERY contract with artists are different. What may be with one, may not hold true with another.
Smaller gigs will tend to get larger revenue, vs a big international name (madonna, britney, U2, etc) they get percentages/royalities.
Why do you think many artists have branched off and made their own production company, after they have been successful?? They did not like some things that were being done in the business. |
